How to Clean Grout and Keep It White

A freshly mopped floor or scrubbed shower can still look grimy if the grout lines are dark and stained. Because grout is porous, it traps everything — but with the right approach you can brighten it and keep it that way.

Why grout gets dirty

Grout is essentially a porous cement, full of tiny channels that soak up dirt, grease, soap scum, and moisture. In bathrooms it collects mildew; in kitchens and entryways it absorbs grime and foot traffic. Once that staining works its way into the pores, a quick mopping won't reach it. That's why grout needs targeted cleaning and, ideally, a protective seal.

The everyday cleaning method

For routine brightening, you don't need anything harsh. This works on most sealed and unsealed grout:

  1. Mix baking soda with a little water to form a thick paste.
  2. Spread it along the grout lines and let it sit for a few minutes.
  3. Spray lightly with white vinegar — it will foam as it reacts.
  4. Scrub with a stiff grout brush or an old toothbrush, working along the lines.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and wipe dry.

Test a small spot first on colored or natural stone tile, since vinegar can be too acidic for some surfaces. For those, skip the vinegar and use baking soda with water alone, or a cleaner labeled safe for stone.

For tougher, set-in stains

When everyday cleaning isn't enough, step up carefully:

  • Oxygen-based cleaner. A powdered oxygen bleach mixed with water is gentler than chlorine bleach and effective on dingy grout. Let it dwell, then scrub.
  • Steam. A handheld steamer loosens grime in grout lines without chemicals — just keep steam away from sealed hardwood nearby.
  • Avoid heavy chlorine bleach for regular use. It can erode grout over time and shouldn't be combined with other products.

Always ventilate the room and wear gloves when using stronger cleaners.

Keep it white: sealing and habits

Cleaning grout is satisfying, but sealing it is what keeps your work from undoing itself. A grout sealer fills the pores so stains can't soak in.

  • Seal grout once a year, or whenever water stops beading on the surface.
  • Wipe shower walls with a squeegee after use to cut down on soap scum and mildew.
  • Ventilate bathrooms with a fan or open window to keep moisture from lingering.
  • Wipe up kitchen spills before they settle into the lines.

A few small habits mean you scrub far less often.

When grout is part of a bigger job

Grout cleaning is one of the most tedious parts of keeping tile looking sharp, and it's usually tackled alongside the rest of the room.
