Spring Cleaning Checklist: Room by Room

Spring is the perfect excuse to reset your home from top to bottom. The trick to getting through it without burning out is a clear plan. Work this spring cleaning checklist one room at a time, top to bottom, and your whole house will feel new again.

Whole-home warm-up

Before you dive into individual rooms, knock out the tasks that touch every space:

  • Open windows to air the house out
  • Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and vents
  • Wipe down baseboards, door frames, and switch plates
  • Wash windows and window tracks
  • Launder curtains and freshen rugs

Doing these first means the dust you stir up lands in areas you have not cleaned yet, so nothing gets done twice.

Kitchen

The kitchen collects grease and grime that a quick wipe never fully reaches. Give it a real reset:

  1. Empty, wipe, and reorganize the refrigerator, tossing anything expired
  2. Clean inside the oven and microwave
  3. Wipe cabinet fronts and clear out crumbs from inside
  4. Degrease the range hood and backsplash
  5. Scrub the sink and shine the faucet
  6. Pull out small appliances and clean underneath

Bathrooms

Bathrooms reward a deep clean more than almost any other room. Focus on the buildup that accumulates over winter:

  • Scrub grout, tile, and the tub or shower
  • Descale the showerhead and faucets
  • Disinfect the toilet inside and out, base included
  • Clear out and wipe down cabinets and drawers
  • Wash bath mats and replace anything worn

Bedrooms

Bedrooms are about fresh air and a clean start to your day:

  • Flip or rotate the mattress and wash all bedding
  • Dust headboards, nightstands, and dressers
  • Clean under the bed where dust collects
  • Wipe down closet shelves and donate what you no longer wear
  • Vacuum thoroughly, edges and corners included

Living areas

Your common spaces take the most daily wear, so a spring reset goes a long way:

  • Vacuum upholstery and under cushions
  • Dust shelves, electronics, and decor
  • Wipe down remotes and other high-touch items
  • Spot-clean walls and refresh carpets or hard floors
  • Clean glass surfaces and mirrors

Entryways and the often-forgotten spots

Finish with the transition areas and the places that hide in plain sight:

  • Shake out or wash entry mats
  • Wipe down the front door inside and out
  • Clean light switches, handles, and railings
  • Vacuum stairs, including the edges
  • Dust the tops of doors and tall furniture
